Causing much interest at the 'Ring is the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. According to Porsche: "Its intelligent electronics ensure reduced fuel consumption without compromising performance - and additional power, which can be called up by drivers for overtaking. Electric front-wheel-drive with two electric motors developing 60 kW each supplement the 480 hp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid which drives the rear axle. A flywheel generator supplies the energy for the E-engines."
An intelligent guess suggests that the Porsche may make three less pitstops during the 24 hours and the part-time four-wheel-drive will assist with cornering. Hit the boost button when experiencing oversteer to stop the tail wagging the dog. The project has relied on work done by the Williams F1 team when developing the KERS system, now shelved.
It is hard to make out the touted 'green' element in racing the Porsche Hybrid at the "Green Hell" but this certainly is one high-tech motor car. We'll be watching the progress of car #9 with interest.
